Rebecca’s Maternity Session on the Farm

SESSION 1/2

When I first started my photography business I was so excited to photograph my very good friend of 15+ years who was pregnant with her second boy at the time. Our session was quite exciting for me, because it was the first time I had done a shoot where I had complete control over all the elements – and the first shoot for my new business.

Coming from my background of being a commercial photographer (10+ years working for the same company) the idea of photographing families and motherhood wasn’t something I always thought of doing. It’s one of those things that was so obviously right in front of me, yet took me stepping away from the camera at my full time job (when I was promoted to art director, and no longer shooting) which made me realized I truly miss being behind the camera so much! I had spent every day shooting product or lifestyle sessions at my full time job, but then suddenly I wasn’t shooting anymore, apart from my point & shoot/iphone with my kids. Being a new mom and a creative, I was also really yearning for photos of me with my kids because I realized I had tonnes of beautiful photos of them but none that I was in with them. As Moms we rarely get behind the camera – especially being a photographer myself!

It was then that I started noticing really creative photography both on pinterest and some accounts I follow that specialized in documenting motherhood. I realized family photography can be so much more than cheesy studio sessions but that there is artistry and endless creativity that can be poured into this field. Once my wheels started turning at this idea, in my fashion I was determined and inspired to make it happen. I had to jump start my ideas with a logo and branding as this is always my first step to get me going. I’m a design school graduate and any chance I can get at designing a new logo or working on branding I’ll take. I think this was my favourite part of the cookie business I ran during my first maternity leave (Milikies Cookie Co.) and still to this day I’m very proud of the branding and logo.. and I’ve got about a million logo stickers still to remind me.

Anyways – this session was kind of a two part session because it was my first and we shot for longer than my typical sessions. These maternity photos by the pond were so fun to do but I think we picked the absolute coldest fall day. We made it work and baby lochlan was an absolute trooper (and the sweetest!) There’s something so special about maternity photos that include your kids that I love.. a woman’s body is just so amazing and seeing your first baby beside your new baby thats growing in your belly is just so magical. Rebecca, you’re an absolute beauty inside and out and i’m so grateful for you putting trust into me during this session! Sharing the farm with us for your session was also so fun for me.
